What Is Homeopathy?
In 1796, Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor, chemist and linguist, discovered a different approach to curing sickness, the way of similars instead of the usual way of opposites.
This new system of medicine he called homeopathy (from two Greek words “homeos” – similar and “pathos” – suffering. The Law of Similars has been known to the medical profession since the time of classical Greece – and Hahnemann, through detailed experimentation, systematised and developed it.
How Does It Work?
Homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body’s own healing power. They work through processes which conventional science cannot yet explain.
Homeopathy is a holistic medicine. The remedies mobilise the body’s defence system – working on the mental, emotional and physical aspects of the patient. As it is the body’s energy which is influenced rather than its chemical balance, there are no side effects. Homeopathic medicines are very powerful and capable of treating deep-seated diseases and, as such, need to be treated with respect, (in common with all powerful remedies).
Remedies can be prescribed in a variety of ways, from a single dose to doses every day over a period of time. Both the frequency and potency depend upon the individual’s state of health at that time.
As a Classically trained homeopath I am likely to give you 1 remedy at a time with full instructions on how and when to take the remedy. Some practitioners will give a combination of remedies and this is called Complex Homeopathy.
What Are Homeopathic Remedies?
The remedies come from many natural sources. They are prepared through a process of dilution and succussion. These diluted remedies are described as being “potentised”, in recognition of the dynamic healing power they can stimulate. Paradoxically, Hahnemann discovered (by experimenting on himself, his friends and his family) that the weaker the solution becomes the stronger the healing effect.
What does your Homeopath need to know?
A detailed understanding of you, your medical diagnosis and how you experience it.
Also your past medical history, family medical history, lifestyle, likes, dislikes and fears. This is so that all elements of you, the individual, are covered before choosing a remedy that is specific for you, an individual.
The homeopath needs to match the remedy picture with the symptoms you are presenting with in order to stimulate the therapeutic reaction.
The Potential of Homeopathy
Homeopathy offers an alternative approach which many people, suffering from a wide variety of conditions often find helpful. It focuses on you as an individual, treating your specific physical and mental symptoms, to give long lasting benefits.
